Rising Clothing Consumption & Environmental Impact: How We Can Make a Difference
The Environmental Cost of Increasing Textile Consumption
The demand for textile products is increasing rapidly, along with the environmental cost.
The average EU citizen purchased 19 kg of clothing in 2022, up from 17 kg in 2019. This represents an increase of nearly 12% in just three years. Clothing is among the top four categories of consumption that exert the most pressure on the environment, especially in terms of water usage, soil degradation, and greenhouse gas emissions.
In the EU, 11 kg of clothing per person is discarded annually, most of which ends up in landfills or incinerators.
But we can change this, and that’s the goal of the European project SiT – Sustainability in TCLF, in which OECON GROUP is involved.
What you can do:
- Rethink fast fashion – buy less, but better.
- Extend the lifespan of your clothes through repair and reuse.
- Choose second-hand, exchanges, and textile recycling.
The life cycle of fabrics does not end in waste. Let’s make conscious choices because sustainability starts from our wardrobes.
